What are the millennium development goals?

According to Kofi Annan “The Millennium Development Goals were adopted five years ago by all the world’s governments as a blueprint for building a better world in the 21st century.”

  • Goal 2: Achieve universal primary education
  • Goal 3: Promote gender equality and empower women
  • Goal 4: Reduce child mortality
  • Goal 5: Improve maternal health

  • Goal 7: Ensure environmental sustainability
  • Goal 8: Develop a Global Partnership for Development

These programs need political support and pressure to become realized. It is not enough to sit back and expect some distant governing body to take care of everything. Achieving these goals will take working with governments – and those of us with governments established by the people and for the people have an added responsibility to champion these causes.
